Cohen Ayers (working with Laird Campbell)

In a visit with Laird Campbell, Cohen took to doodling an adventuresome and complex piece involving dinosaurs and snails – two of his favourite subjects. With Laird’s help that doodle evolved into a collaboration between the two – a two-piece complex of relief and form, marrying colour and shape that hints at the chemistry that exists between the two artists.

Cohen has been drawing for more than half his life (he’s 5…), and Laird Campbell’s style and works can be viewed at www.lairdcampbell.com.

Her paintings range from intricate, meditative mandalas to loose, expressive landscapes and colourful abstracts. She likes to pass on the joy of creating and the use of painting as a path of mindfulness. To her, teaching is as important as solo work in the studio or in the field. “To see people making art, experiencing peace (or whatever they find) when they slow down, make choices and create…that is exciting.” She echoes Kurt Vonnegut’s belief that making art is part of being human: “It’s as natural as breathing or making love.” She firmly believes that everyone can make art and that the process is as important as the product. “The feast is in the making; in a way, the final product is leftovers!”

Biography: Leanne is primarily a self-taught artist with an academic background and technical training acquired in a variety of visual art programs in the US and Canada. For more than twenty years, she pursued an art practice while developing a remote charter boat company and raising her son, Kai. In the far reaches of coastal BC, Leanne worked as an artist, a DFO contractor enumerating salmon streams, and a guide and naturalist for wildlife charters.

Images of wildlife, coastal landscapes, indigenous cultures, and environmental themes are expressively interwoven in Leanne’s paintings and mixed media artworks. Technically and creatively, she is attracted to and challenged by cross media formats, with a special interest in life-size models and murals. This gives her artwork a uniqueness and originality not typically found in west coast portraiture, wildlife or landscape art.

These qualities converge in Leanne’s current interest in paper pulp, an eco-conscious medium capable of lightweight applications and increased pliability for three dimensional pieces. It also lends versatility to highly modelled and textured surfaces in her works on canvas.

I have lived in the Cowichan Station community for nearly 10 years now and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. The strong green trees, the peaceful river, the moving history of the area is so beautiful, and I believe that it should never be lost.

I chose to paint a Sockeye Salmon because of its beauty, its link to the communities of the west coast, and because I believe just like the Hub, that they should never be lost either. Doing your part and supporting the HUB is your chance to do something great, and bring back a little bit of history.

Oliver’s parents are volunteers helping to restore and renovate the HUB, and he wanted to offer this as his contribution to the effort.
