HUB Café Cook, Manager

Job summary
Responsibilities include menu & budget preparation; food procurement and shopping; preparing
sandwiches, wraps, quiche, salads, soups, creating daily/weekly specials and other general food prep;
managing cafe volunteer helpers; managing inventory, plus overall management and leadership in
running the HUB Café.

The HUB is a community managed community center and is a fundraising enterprise for the Cowichan
Station Area Association. The HUB Cafe is a popular community gathering space where value is placed on
respect, integrity, efficiency, inclusiveness, advocacy and sustainability. As the Café leader, the incumbent
will be personable, welcoming and love interacting with community members as well as providing
delicious, nourishing food!

Prime functions
Organize, procure & prepare weekly or daily menu items
 Create café menu ensuring adequate options for consumers
 Develop vendor relationships with a keen eye to cost savings & quality, shop locally whenever
 Procure all needed foodstuffs and materials for café
 Prepare nutritious and delicious menu items
 Serve, store, preserve and dispose of foodstuffs using industry highest standards
 Ensure complete compliance with all licensing & regulatory bodies
 Ensure all Food Safe, sanitation and food handling & saving standards are followed
 Ensure compliance with local health authority guidelines and regulations
 Ensure the highest standards of organization and sanitation are followed
 Ensure compliance with all CSAA Policies
 Ensure Financial Management
 Ensure all purchases are as cost effective as possible
 Ensure left over foods are stored or disposed of appropriately
 Ensure receipts are submitted in an organized and timely manner
 Provide daily Café records are complete & submitted (sales & volunteers)
Organize and oversee café volunteers
 Organize volunteers to cover shifts
 Orient, train & coach volunteers to café specific procedures
 Ensure volunteers are treated respectfully, acknowledged and appreciated each and every shift!

Customer Relations
 Ensure guests are treated promptly, respectfully and welcomingly
 Deal with any conflicts, complaints or issues in a calm & respectful manner

Position Expectations
 Weekly time commitment of 6 hours (potential for more hours if operations expand)
 Salary range between $ 16.00- $19.00 per hour depending on experience

 Demonstrated experience running a food service business
 Demonstrated experience as a professional, commercial cook
 Demonstrated experience managing people, including volunteers
 One of the following: Current Food Safe Certificate 1 or 2, Safe Check or Food Handler

 Police Record Check (or willingness to obtain)
 First Aid level 1 (or willingness to obtain)
 WHMIS an asset
 Financial acumen: budgeting, procurement, cash flow, & reporting
